If you have searched for a plumber, electrician or locksmith recently, you have probably seen them: a row of local businesses at the very top of Google, each with a star rating, a "Google Guaranteed" badge and a call button. Those are Google Local Services Ads, and for many UK trades they have become one of the most useful sources of enquiries.

They work differently from normal Google Ads, so it is worth understanding them properly before you commit. This guide covers how they work in the UK, who can use them, what they cost, how to rank and how they compare with Search Ads.

What are Google Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads (LSAs) are a separate Google ad product for local service businesses. Instead of writing ads and bidding on keywords, you create a profile with your services, service area, hours and reviews. Google decides when to show it, and you pay when a customer contacts you through the ad, not when they click.

Which UK businesses can use Local Services Ads?

LSAs are only available for certain categories. Google's own help pages list categories such as plumbers and HVAC (heating and air conditioning), and UK guides published in 2026 list home-service trades including plumbers, electricians, heating engineers, locksmiths, cleaners and roofers, plus some professional services. Categories change over time, so check the current list for your trade and area in the Local Services Ads sign-up before planning around it.

If your trade is not listed, for example many landscapers, flooring fitters and driveway companies, Search Ads remain the main route on Google.

Google Guaranteed and Google Screened

In the UK, home-service trades show a Google Guaranteed badge, which comes with a money-back guarantee from Google to the customer, up to a lifetime cap, if they are unhappy with the work booked through the ad. Some professional services show Google Screened instead, which has no money-back guarantee. You do not choose the badge; it depends on your category.

What verification involves

  • Business registration details.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Licences or registrations where your trade requires them (for example, Gas Safe registration for gas work).
  • Background checks on the business and, in many categories, on field staff, carried out through Google's screening partner.
  • A Google Business Profile, ideally with reviews.

Verification can take anything from a few days to several weeks. Start early if you want to be live before a busy season.

How much do Local Services Ads cost in the UK?

Google sets lead prices by category and area. Published 2026 UK estimates put LSA leads at roughly £15 to £50 depending on trade and location (Trade2Base), with plumbing, electrical and heating leads in UK cities typically around £15 to £45. Low-competition categories can be cheaper, and competitive city trades can cost more.

You set a weekly budget. Google treats it as an average rather than a hard daily cap, so spend can vary day to day but should not exceed the monthly equivalent of your weekly figure.

Disputing bad leads

If a lead is clearly not valid, for example outside your service area, for a service you do not offer, or spam, you can dispute it and may receive a credit. UK guides published in 2026 note the review process is now largely automated and credits are not guaranteed, so do not rely on disputes to fix poor targeting. Keep your service types and area accurate.

How Local Services Ads rank

Google has not published a formula, but the commonly understood signals are:

  1. Reviews: your star rating and the number of reviews.
  2. Responsiveness: how quickly you answer calls and reply to messages. Missed leads hurt.
  3. Proximity: how close you are to the customer within your service area.
  4. Business hours: you only show when you are open.
  5. Complaints and disputes: a high rate can count against you.

In practice, the businesses that do best with LSAs are the ones that answer the phone. If you are on a job all day with no one taking calls, consider an answering service before you turn LSAs on.

Setting up Local Services Ads: step by step

  1. Check your category is available in your area in the Local Services Ads sign-up.
  2. Create your profile: services, service area (postcodes or towns), hours, business details.
  3. Upload insurance, licence and registration documents; complete background checks.
  4. Connect your Google Business Profile and gather reviews.
  5. Set a weekly budget and choose which job types you want leads for.
  6. Once live, answer every lead quickly and mark outcomes in the app.

Are LSAs worth it?

For eligible trades doing urgent, local, phone-led work, often yes. The leads come to you exclusively, the badge builds trust, and you do not pay for clicks that never call. Trade2Base's 2026 modelling put the resulting cost per booked job at around £25 to £125, which compares well with most alternatives.

They are less suitable when:

  • you want specific high-value jobs and not small callouts, because you cannot pick keywords;
  • your category is not available;
  • you cannot answer calls reliably, which hurts both ranking and conversion;
  • you have very few reviews and a new profile.

LSAs and Search Ads together

Many busy trades run both. Local Services Ads handle urgent local callouts; Search Ads target the specific, higher-value jobs and areas you want more of, with a landing page that sells them. Track both in the same call log and compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead. We compare them in detail in Local Services Ads vs Google Search Ads.
